The Development and Preparation of PCR POF Shrink Film

Sustainability plays an essential role in human being’s future life, which will affect every aspect of our daily life. Packaging of product is not an exception. To meet requirement of sustainability, post-consumer recycled (PCR) POF shrink film emerges and completely aligns with sustainability in three aspects, which is also known as three-pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental.

Social sustainability

PCR POF shrink film production creates a wide range of jobs. The recycling and manufacturing processes involved in producing PCR POF shrink film can provide employment opportunities in collection, sorting, processing, and manufacturing, offering considerable room for career training, progression and development.

Environmental sustainability

There are three essential components of environmentally-responsible consumer behavior, which are reduce, reuse and recycle while PCR POF shrink film perfectly reflects the 3Rs. By recycling PCR plastic resins, reusing these plastic resins, new POF shrink films are generated, through which, the demand for virgin resources, such as petroleum is reduced, and energy consumption and carbon footprint are also reduced as well.

Economic sustainability

As consumers and businesses become more environmentally conscious, the use of PCR POF shrink film has seen significant growth in recent years. Offering PCR POF shrink film can increase the revenue of company, contributing to profitability of the business.

Considering these advantages of PCR POF shrink film, Sunward has developed PCR POF shrink film and now is capable of running production in bulk.

There are several key steps:

1, Sourcing PCR POF Materials:

Sunward works closely with authorized recycling facility, identify and source clean and sorted PCR plastic resin, ensuring the collected PCR POF materials are to be removed from contaminants, impurities and residues and also to be separated by different types of plastics.

2, Blending and Production

Sunward has developed a unique formulation for PCR POF shrink film. In the process of development, Sunward R&D team blended recycled POF material with virgin material and necessary additive in specific percentage, repetitively tested and adjusted technique (e.g. extrusion temperature) and equipments, successfully produced PCR POF shrink film with both eligible physical and mechanical properties.

3, Testing Materials 

Sunward conducts tests on the PCR POF material, assesses its properties, including shrinkability, clarity, tensile strength, tear and seal strength, etc. The result shows PCR POF shrink film can comply with quality standard and meet specific requirements of POF shrink film. 

Now Sunward is able to manufacture PCR POF shrink film of which the thickness is 15micron, 19 micron, 25 micron and 30 micron. The percentage of recycled material achieves 30%, fulfilling the requirement of global recycled standard. Therefore, Sunward obtained the SGS’s Scope Certificate of GRS version 4.0 in April 2023.
